Free 5-Minute Guided Meditation Download Meditation on Patanjali Yoga Sutra I:2 Chitt Vritti Nirodh
Brijendra’s definition of this verses is: “The state of Oneness occurs when there is freedom from the modifications of the mind”. Brijendra’s knowledge of the spaces that are spoken about in this verse and his clear voice that comes directly from the space of nirodh, or freedom from the waves of the mind, will gently guide you into the deepest meaning of the famous verse.
Meditation tunes you in to who you really are. Over the course of your lifetime you have gathered and accumulated many experiences and they have formed a sense of: “I am this kind of person, I am that kind of person.” Such conclusions have been presented to you and corroborated by those around you, people that you have met, situations that you have found yourself in, and these have all been added on to your sense of “I am.” And so your sense of “I” became: I am a doctor, I am a gardener, I am a sailor, etc. All such identities accumulate in us over time, but there was something there before these identities were superimposed. Meditation is the way to attune yourself to your original identity, your original being. That is your own Being, which you always are.
The Sage Patanjali in the second sootra of Yog Darshan says that the state Yog, which we can say is Oneness, occurs when chitt vritti nirodh takes place. Chitt could simply be said to be the mind. Vritti could be said to be a thought or a wave of the mind, a modification of the mind. And nirodh is freedom from the waves of the mind. Putting these together, we have: “The state of Oneness occurs when there is freedom from the modifications of the mind.”
Patajnjali in Yog Darshan is eminently practical. He is indicating what you should do if you want to attain the state of Yog which is the state of indivisible Being. That state, the Yog state, is free from all the accumulated identities that you have picked up, and accepted, over years and years. In meditation you are practicing chitt vritti nirodh, the state of freedom from identification with the vrittis of your mind. Normally, the chitt, or mind, is focused on, and is concerned with, perceptions of thoughts and impressions through the senses, and it thinks and assumes that these perceptions and thoughts are reality. In doing so, it overlooks its own original nature that existed before those perceptions and thoughts arose, and now pays attention to the world of forms, and concludes that it is one form among the many world forms. This state of outward orientation of the mind is called vyutthaan, and it is the opposite of nirodh, which is the state of mind that occurs when there is awareness of Self. So in meditation you are shifting from the dualistic, waking state of the vyuthaan vritti chitt to the nirodh state which leads to Oneness. The state of indivisible Oneness is Yog.
