Learn the Essential Teachings of the Bhagavad Gita

Study this ancient system of wisdom culminating in enlightenment – the vision of oneness – where all of existence is seen as one infinite, eternal, indestructible reality.

The teachings of the Gita allow those who study and practice them to live and act in the world with greater joy and effectiveness, free from pain and suffering. The Gita declares that the cause of a person’s suffering is ignorance of one’s true, immortal essence which is known in Sanskrit as the Atma, the Self. It also gives the means to remove that ignorance and live life to the fullest. The Gita addresses the essential questions which confront all human beings: birth and death, happiness and unhappiness, fear and fearlessness, love and hatred, action and inaction.

In this course, the author Glen Kezwer reveals the essence of the Bhagavad Gita, giving us the benefit of his 25 years of experience as a meditator, teacher, author, and practitioner of Indian philosophy.

The teachings of the Gita are given by Krishna to Arjun in the middle of a battlefield as a great war is about to commence. The course begins by detailing the events which led up to this war and the characters involved, and then discusses the important and often vexing question of why a such a scripture would be set against a backdrop of war.

The symbolism of the Gita, which is crucial to understanding its meaning, is described in detail. This is followed by a section on the teachings of the Gita which explains its purpose and philosophy, and then proceeds to outline the crux of these teachings, which is how to know the immortal, indestructible Self which dwells within all beings. The course concludes with an extensive explanation of the four principal yogas or paths to enlightenment which constitute the essence of the Gita. Here the paths of knowledge (gyaan), action (karm), devotion (bhakti) and meditation (dhyaan) are described in the light of the overriding understanding that the infinite Self is the basis of all.

The chapters included in this course are:

Chapter I — Introduction
Chapter II — The Story of the Bhagavad Gita in the Context of the Mahabharat
Chapter III — The Bhagavad Gita and War
Chapter IV — Symbolism in the Bhagavad Gita
Chapter V — The Teachings of the Bhagavad Gita

For the student to hear and learn the pronunciation of the Sanskrit verses and understand their meanings, an audio album is included with the course. On the recording seven selected verses from chapter II are spoken and chanted, and the English translation of the each verse is given along with the meaning of the individual words. Listen to a sound byte.

This course is accessible to beginners as well as to students more familiar with the science and art of Yoga. The emphasis throughout is on the understanding of the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and the application of these teachings to one’s life. Read the Reviews. About Glen Kezwer, Ph.D.
